Gentiva owns Southern Care New Beacon-Alabaster. Around the last week of March 2026, SCNB gave me 2 day's notice before discharging my from hospice care. At that time, my 87 year old mother lived in a nursing home in Columbiana (that particular nursing home is a hell scape and I discharged my mother for suspicions of neglect and abuse) and was still recovering from pneumonia and weighed 100 pounds. The manager Alison Moore (who is probably gone by now) told me that my mother no longer met Medicare criteria, but if my mother lost 10% of her current weight or came down with another infection, Dr. Bullard (their medical director who knowingly submitted "inaccurate" and cherry picked records to Medicare to support their claim that mama no longer qualified" would "consider" reevaluating her. My response was, "You do realize that if she loses 10% of her current weight, she'll be dead?" Alison's suggestion was to call another hospice to find out if they will take my mother. They took away the specialized wheelchair my mother needed without giving me the opportunity to locate a replacement. Mama requires a GeriChair or Broda Chair. She had end-stage Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinson's, and her body was totally rigid. She was nonverbal, her legs were locked at the knees in a criss-crossed position, and her arms were bent and locked in a criss-crossed position across her chest. Her body was totally rigid, and she can't sit in a regular wheelchair without falling out, so she had to use one of those specialty wheelchairs. The nursing home had a spare chair that one resident was using, and the cruel incompetent nursing home director took the specialty chair from that resident and gave it to mama (I begged the nursing home director to give it back to the other resident, but she told me, "It's fine. Your mother needs it more"). I eventually located one, but SCNB disrespected and denigrated my mother and created a fall risk when they did what they did to her. Since then I have made several written requests for a full set of my mother's records, and they refuse to give them to me. Hopefully this review will motivate them to give me what I asked for and am entitled to. In the meantime, I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Medicare and the Alabama Department of Public Health come knocking in response to my complaints. Gentiva encourages its subsidiaries to mistreat patients, deflect, make changes to patient medications without notifying the patient's legal representative, refuse records requests, and "misinform" patients and their representative.
I have utilized this company for my grandfather (both home health and hospice) as well as for my Granny. The care was beautiful, considerate and caring. This is why I do what I do- I love helping educate and assist patients and families in what is one of the most difficult times in their lives and make it a little bit easier on them by providing resources, making sure equipment is set up in the home, and coordinating their clinical care. This is the most intimate level of care, and it is such a gift to be able to work with Kindred Hospice and help others in a time that I can completely relate to.
I am the patient and I have a fungating tumor on my breast which is like having large open wounds and ulcers on my right breast which is very painful. I have been using Kindred close to a year and at times have had various problems, but yesterday took the cake! For well over 6mos I have been picking up my pain medication every Tuesday, I'm not a pharmacist but worked in the medical field for over 35 years so I'm not completely stupid! I called the pharmacy and asked if my medicine was ready and was told that my orders had been changed and would not be ready until Wednesday. That was quite upsetting because of my pain and if anyone is familiar with someone who has been taking pain medicine for any length of time your body becomes use to it or addicted and being a terminally ill cancer patients it adds further suffering to your body. Well, they discovered yesterday that they should have been giving me my medicine every 10 days instead of every 7. This was not my error but theirs so they decided I didn't need my medicine then and also to reduced my dosage to try to correct their mistake and when I ask for an explanation I was told to just do as they said and not to question them that I had been misusing my medicine, really, as I said I was doing what they prescribed! I didn't appreciate being talked down to like I was some common street drug addict! I immediately changed to a new hospice and will never use kindred or recommend it to anyone!
