I am going to leave a high review even though I did not stay with Southern Grace. We signed (my mom & I) signed with another hospice agency; however, she was admitted to the hospital before anything got started; her PCP and oncologist discussed her transitioning to hospice and mom signed with Southern Grace. She really loves Dr. Caulfield (he’s been our PCP for years). I only left Southern Grace because I felt they had a lot of patients and not enough employees. Our nurses were changed randomly and I was told when the new nurse showed up to take my mom’s vitals. The main issue, the aide my mom had and loved was injured at work and the substitute aide that was sent, I didn’t care for her energy. It felt like she didn’t really want to be there. We had another one who was amazing like the first, Pam. If they would’ve sent me her, I would’ve been happy but my mom had gotten sick and there was vomit everywhere, in her hair, bed everywhere. I was limited to what I could do because of a vertebral fracture. I did my best to wipe her down and could only put clean sheets on top the bed. My mom went 2 weeks without a bath, because she wasn’t on anyone’s schedule. I wrote to the nurse, or director of nursing and told him that she needed an aide asap but not to send the aide they kept sending. We would change her bathing days for Pam, if necessary. But they wanted to send the first sub and it just wasn’t ok. Because Dr. Caulfield is the medical director and he’s a wonderful doctor; I should’ve told him that we were switching but I didn’t know how to. We are now working towards our 3rd hospice agency.
Southern Grace Hospice is by far the best hospice around. Personally working as a DON in a facility, I can tell you their nurses are like no other. They collaborate with our staff well. Their nurses can be available in person within minutes of a call. Our families of the residents they care for couldn’t be more pleased. Not only are they compassionate but they want the absolute best care for their residents. They treat each individual resident according to their needs specifically as opposed to a blanket hospice plan. They are able to provide more treatment/care than any other hospice I have encountered. A company that is owned and operated by nurses is truly making a huge difference in our community!
The staff of Southern Grace welcomed us with open arms. They handled everything from setting up the hospital bed and equipment before my wife left the hospital. They coordinated the nursing schedule to the medication, they have social worker to a pastor to help with the everyday issues. The nurses really care for their patients, like a family member. My wife could not have had better team to help through last days.
