My mother started hospice in January, 2025. In the beginning, things went pretty well. There were some annoying things like getting inundated with calls by hospice staff, mostly to talk about themselves and their expertise which was unnecessary and a bit insensitive as the daughter. But things went fairly well with her regular nurse coming weekly. Then in March, 2025 my mom fell and broke her hip at her assisted living facility. Without going to the hospital, she would die, which we all understood. The next day, I got a call from hospice saying that they had "scheduling issues" and they would not be seeing my mom. I couldn't believe it. They literally left me at the worst possible time, with no explanation, no help, and could care less. My husband and I spent the next five days at my mom's side, googling what to do, what medications to give to ease her pain, and taking shifts to stay by her side 24/7. Imagine googling "death rattle" for your mother. I, and I alone, had to direct the assisted living staff with medications such as morphine, Haldol, etc to keep her calm and comfortable. Luckily, I had our "concierge medicine" doctor on call to help. But obviously, at quite an expense, which shouldn't have been necessary. When she died, we unfortunately had to call them, despite them being AWOL during her death process. A new nurse showed up about an hour after she passed. My husband and I had to change her, put on clothes, etc. Can you imagine? This new nurse asked where I wanted my mother's body sent. We said Rivera Funeral Home. She corrected us on my husband's pronunciation, so I know she knew where we wanted her cremated. But.. they sent her to the WRONG FUNERAL HOME. I spent the next day trying to find my mother's body. It was unbelievable. Cruel, uncaring, unethical, dishonest, unprofessional. I fear some sort of retaliation because the guy who runs this place, so I hesitate to post this, but I don't want this to happen to anyone. I think I have PTSD over it, too. Do not trust this organization with someone you love. It was one of the absolute worst experiences of my life and I will never forget or forgive. To remember my mom's last days and moments like this, and what I had to go through (taking out her catheter after death, googling info on dying)... it's almost too much. Shame on them.
