Understanding Hospice Accreditation

What is Hospice Accreditation?

All Medicare-certified hospices must meet federal standards for quality and safety. However, some hospices choose to pursue additional accreditation from recognized organizations, which involves rigorous evaluation and demonstrates a commitment to exceeding minimum standards.

Accreditation is voluntary and indicates that a hospice has undergone comprehensive evaluation by an independent organization and has been found to meet or exceed high standards for quality, safety, and patient care.

Types of Accreditation

All Medicare-certified hospices meet federal standards. Accredited providers have earned additional recognition from:

  • ACHC (Accreditation Commission for Health Care): Independent, nonprofit organization that accredits healthcare providers, including hospices
  • CHAP (Community Health Accreditation Partner): Recognized accrediting body for community-based healthcare organizations, including hospices
  • Joint Commission: Nationally recognized accrediting organization that evaluates healthcare organizations, including hospices

What Accreditation Means

Accreditation indicates that a hospice:

  • Has undergone comprehensive evaluation by an independent organization
  • Meets or exceeds high standards for quality, safety, and patient care
  • Has demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement
  • Maintains policies, procedures, and practices that meet accreditation standards
  • Undergoes regular re-evaluation to maintain accreditation status

Why Accreditation Matters

While all Medicare-certified hospices meet federal standards, accreditation provides additional assurance of quality. Accredited hospices have voluntarily chosen to undergo rigorous evaluation and demonstrate their commitment to excellence. For families, accreditation can be one factor to consider when choosing a hospice provider, along with ratings, reviews, and other quality indicators.

Planning beyond hospice

Choosing an accredited hospice is one important decision. Families often have additional questions about estate planning, elder law, advance directives, funeral planning, and other next steps.

Placements are limited and selective — we review applications and only accept organizations that meet our standards for this section. Listings are paid advertising, not recommendations or endorsements. Families review the information and choose professionals for themselves.
