Understanding Adult Hospice Care

What is Adult Hospice Care?

Adult hospice care is the primary form of hospice services, designed to provide compassionate, comprehensive end-of-life care for adults facing life-limiting illnesses. All Medicare-certified hospice providers in Ohio offer adult hospice care as their core service.

Hospice care focuses on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients and their families. The care is provided by an interdisciplinary team including doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers who work together to address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Key Features of Adult Hospice Care

Adult hospice care includes:

  • Pain and Symptom Management: Expert medical care focused on comfort and quality of life
  • Emotional and Spiritual Support: Counseling and support for patients and families
  • Care at Home: Over 90% of hospice care happens in the patient's home or place of residence
  • 24/7 Availability: Round-the-clock support and crisis care when needed
  • Medicare Coverage: Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans
  • Family Support: Grief counseling and bereavement support for up to 13 months after loss

When is Hospice Care Appropriate?

Hospice care is appropriate when:

  • A physician has determined the patient has a life-limiting illness with a prognosis of six months or less if the disease runs its normal course
  • The patient and family have decided to focus on comfort and quality of life rather than curative treatment
  • The patient is eligible for Medicare Part A or has other insurance coverage for hospice

It's important to note that choosing hospice care does not mean giving up hope. Instead, it's about shifting focus to living as fully and comfortably as possible during the time that remains.

Other important resources for families

Choosing hospice is often just one of many important decisions families face. Questions about estate planning, elder law, advance directives, funeral planning, veterans’ benefits, and other next steps frequently arise at the same time.

Placements are limited and selective — we review applications and only accept organizations that meet our standards for this section. Listings are paid advertising, not recommendations or endorsements. Families review the information and choose professionals for themselves.
