Stroke and End-of-Life Care
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. While many stroke survivors recover, some strokes are severe enough to cause significant disability or lead to complications that require hospice care.
Post-stroke patients may experience paralysis, speech difficulties, swallowing problems, cognitive impairment, and other complications. When recovery is no longer possible or complications become life-limiting, hospice care provides comfort and support.
Unique Aspects of Hospice Care for Stroke
All Medicare-certified hospices can serve patients after stroke. Hospice care for stroke patients typically includes:
- •Swallowing Management: Expertise in managing dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) and preventing aspiration pneumonia
- •Mobility & Positioning: Specialized techniques to maintain comfort and prevent complications in paralyzed or partially paralyzed patients

- •Skin Care: Prevention and management of pressure sores in immobile patients

When to Consider Hospice for Stroke
Hospice care for stroke is appropriate when the patient has significant disability, complications are life-limiting, and the focus shifts to comfort and quality of life rather than recovery. This may include patients with severe paralysis, persistent coma, or multiple complications that make recovery unlikely.
